Overview

Plantation shutters, made to fit

Plantation shutters do three jobs at once. Tilt the louvers to steer daylight, close them for privacy, and swing the panels open when you want the whole window.

Every opening is measured on site, including whether the frame is square. Panels and frames are then built to those numbers, so the shutter sits tight to the trim with even gaps.

Most of the shutters we install are made by Norman Window Fashions. We bring Norman louver, frame and color samples to your home so you can hold them up to your own trim.

Plantation shutters: tilt the louvers to steer light and keep privacy.

Try it

See how louvers steer the light

  • Drag the tilt slider, or tap Morning, Afternoon and Night.
  • Open louvers give you the view. Closed louvers give privacy and a darker room.
  • Louvers move together, the way Norman InvisibleTilt works with no rod on the front.

What you can choose

Options to choose from

Norman Woodlore

A wood composite shutter with a polypropylene finish that wipes clean and resists chipping and yellowing. Comes in six whites, from Pure White to Sea Mist.

Norman Woodlore Plus

The same look with added strength and moisture resistance, for wider panels, kitchens and baths.

Norman Normandy

Premium hardwood shutters in painted or stained finishes that match existing trim.

Norman AquaShield

Built for the wettest spots in the house, such as a window inside a shower.

Sliding door shutters

Bypass and bifold shutters that cover a sliding glass door and match the windows beside it.

Arches and angles

Sunburst and angled frames for arched, eyebrow and rake windows.

Five louver sizes

Norman louvers run from 1 7/8 inch to 4 1/2 inch. Wider louvers give a more open view and a more current look.

InvisibleTilt

Norman’s hidden tilt moves the louvers together with no rod on the front of the panel.

Light control

Need it darker? Shade fabrics we pair with shutters

Tap through the fabrics. The right one depends on the room and the direction the window faces.

Glows and stays private

Light filtering

You cannot see through it, but daylight passes through the weave and brightens the whole room. It is the fabric most people choose for living rooms, kitchens and offices.

  • Privacy day and night
  • Softens glare on screens
  • Wide range of colors and textures

Blocks most of the light

Room darkening

An opaque fabric that stops the view and most of the daylight. A thin line of light can still show around the edges of the shade.

  • Bedrooms and nurseries
  • Media rooms
  • Street-facing windows

The darkest option

Blackout

Norman LightGuard 360 adds side channels and a sealed top and bottom to a room darkening roller shade, which closes the light gaps around the fabric.

  • Light sleepers and shift workers
  • Home theaters
  • Nurseries

Keeps the view

Solar screen

An open weave that cuts glare, heat and UV while you still see out. Openness runs from 1% to 10%. Lower numbers block more sun, and higher numbers keep more of the view.

  • Sunrooms and west-facing windows
  • Rooms with a view worth keeping
  • Less private at night with the lights on

How it moves

Motorization and lift options

Every shade can be moved by hand or by a motor. You can mix them from room to room.

By hand, no cords

PrecisionLift

Norman PrecisionLift has no cord at all. Push or pull the hem bar and the shade stays exactly where you leave it. Try it in the window preview on this site.

  • Nothing dangling at the window
  • Smooth, even travel
  • Our standard lift on roller shades

Lift from the bottom rail

Cordless

Honeycomb shades and blinds lift by hand from the bottom rail. There are no cords for children or pets to reach, and nothing to wrap around a cleat.

  • Honeycomb shades and blinds
  • Top down bottom up available
  • Safer around children and pets

For windows that are awkward to reach

SmartRelease

A Norman lift system made for shades you cannot comfortably move by the hem bar. We bring a working sample to your visit so you can try it before deciding.

  • A good fit for tall windows
  • Try it in person first
  • No motor to charge

A motor without a remote

AutoWand

Norman AutoWand puts the motor controls on a slim wand that hangs from the shade. Press a button and the shade moves, with no remote to lose and no app to set up.

  • Simple motorization
  • Nothing to pair
  • Good for guest rooms and offices

Remote, app, voice and schedules

Smart Motorization

Norman Smart Motorization runs one shade or the whole house from a remote, the Norman app or a voice assistant. Schedules can lower west-facing shades in the afternoon and open the bedroom at sunrise.

  • Rechargeable battery or hardwired
  • Group rooms into scenes
  • The answer for windows out of reach

Where shutters work best

  • Front rooms that face the street, where you want light and privacy together.
  • Dining rooms and offices, where a divider rail lets you open the top and close the bottom.
  • Bathrooms, with composite panels that handle steam.
  • Bedrooms, where closed louvers darken the room and quiet the street.
  • Sliding doors and French doors, with frames that clear the handles.

Good to know

Details worth deciding early

Frames and mounts

A shutter hangs in its own frame, and the frame decides how it meets your trim. Inside mounts sit within the window opening and leave the casing on show. Outside mounts sit on the wall or the trim and suit shallow windows and openings that are out of square. We bring frame samples and hold them up to the window before you choose.

Divider rails and split tilt

A divider rail is a fixed bar across the panel that lets the louvers above and below it move separately. Split tilt does the same job with no visible bar. Either one lets you close the bottom half for privacy and leave the top open for light, which is the setting most people use in a street-facing room.

Shutters and room darkening

Closed louvers darken a room more than most people expect, though a little light still shows between them. For a bedroom that needs to be truly dark, we can fit a room darkening roller shade behind the shutter frame.

The process

How it works

Three visits at most, and usually two.

  1. We come to you

We bring the samples, so you can hold fabrics and finishes up to your own walls, trim and furniture. We measure every window while we are there. The visit is free.

  2. You get a written quote

A clear price for each window, for exactly what you picked. Change it, trim it or take your time with it.

  3. We install

Your order is built to our measurements and installed by our own team. We haul away the old blinds.

Plantation shutter panels with louvers tilted open

Built for the window, not adjusted to it

A shutter is a piece of millwork. If a frame is a quarter inch out of square, a stock panel shows it. We measure top, middle and bottom of every opening and order each panel to fit, then scribe the frame to the wall on install day.

Answers

Shutter questions

How much do plantation shutters cost?

Shutters are priced by the size of each window, the material and the frame style. Composite shutters cost less than hardwood. We measure each opening and give you a written per-window price at the free in-home visit.

Are plantation shutters still in style?

Yes. Shutters have been used in Southern homes for generations and suit both traditional and modern rooms. Wider louvers and hidden tilt rods give them a cleaner look than older styles.

Do plantation shutters increase home value?

Shutters are attached to the house and stay with it when you sell, so buyers see them as a finished upgrade. No one can promise a specific return, but they are one of the few window treatments that count as a fixture.

Can shutters go on sliding glass doors?

Yes. Bypass shutters slide on a track like the door, and bifold shutters fold to the side. Both give a sliding door the same look as the windows around it.

Should I choose wood or composite shutters?

Wood is lighter and can be stained, so it suits wide windows and stained trim. Composite resists moisture, which makes it the better choice for bathrooms, kitchens and sunny windows.

How do you clean plantation shutters?

Close the louvers and wipe with a dry microfiber cloth, then flip them and repeat. Composite shutters can take a damp cloth. Avoid soaking wood shutters.
