Overview

Custom blinds, made to fit

Blinds are the workhorse of window treatments. Tilt the slats to control light through the day, or lift them out of the way entirely.

Custom blinds are made to the eighth of an inch, so there are no light gaps at the sides and no slats rubbing the frame. They cost more than a box from the store and they look like part of the house.

Top rail
Bottom rail

Wood blinds: tilt the slats to cut glare, or drag the bottom rail up to lift them out of the way.

Try it

Tilt the slats, then lift the blind

  • Tilt the slats to cut glare without losing daylight.
  • Drag the bottom rail up and watch the slats gather into a stack.
  • Lower it again and tilt the slats closed for privacy.

What you can choose

Options to choose from

Faux wood blinds

Norman faux wood blinds give the look of painted wood in a material that handles moisture. Our most installed blind.

Real wood blinds

Lightweight basswood in stains and paints, for wide windows and rooms with stained trim.

Cordless lift

Raise and lower from the bottom rail. No cords for children or pets to reach.

Routeless slats

Slats without cord holes close tighter for better privacy and room darkening.

Decorative tapes

Fabric tapes cover the cords and add a tailored stripe of color.

Aluminum blinds

Slim, durable and budget friendly for garages, rentals and utility rooms.

Light control

Need it darker? Shade fabrics we pair with blinds

Tap through the fabrics. The right one depends on the room and the direction the window faces.

Glows and stays private

Light filtering

You cannot see through it, but daylight passes through the weave and brightens the whole room. It is the fabric most people choose for living rooms, kitchens and offices.

  • Privacy day and night
  • Softens glare on screens
  • Wide range of colors and textures

Blocks most of the light

Room darkening

An opaque fabric that stops the view and most of the daylight. A thin line of light can still show around the edges of the shade.

  • Bedrooms and nurseries
  • Media rooms
  • Street-facing windows

The darkest option

Blackout

Norman LightGuard 360 adds side channels and a sealed top and bottom to a room darkening roller shade, which closes the light gaps around the fabric.

  • Light sleepers and shift workers
  • Home theaters
  • Nurseries

Keeps the view

Solar screen

An open weave that cuts glare, heat and UV while you still see out. Openness runs from 1% to 10%. Lower numbers block more sun, and higher numbers keep more of the view.

  • Sunrooms and west-facing windows
  • Rooms with a view worth keeping
  • Less private at night with the lights on

How it moves

Motorization and lift options

Every shade can be moved by hand or by a motor. You can mix them from room to room.

By hand, no cords

PrecisionLift

Norman PrecisionLift has no cord at all. Push or pull the hem bar and the shade stays exactly where you leave it. Try it in the window preview on this site.

  • Nothing dangling at the window
  • Smooth, even travel
  • Our standard lift on roller shades

Lift from the bottom rail

Cordless

Honeycomb shades and blinds lift by hand from the bottom rail. There are no cords for children or pets to reach, and nothing to wrap around a cleat.

  • Honeycomb shades and blinds
  • Top down bottom up available
  • Safer around children and pets

For windows that are awkward to reach

SmartRelease

A Norman lift system made for shades you cannot comfortably move by the hem bar. We bring a working sample to your visit so you can try it before deciding.

  • A good fit for tall windows
  • Try it in person first
  • No motor to charge

A motor without a remote

AutoWand

Norman AutoWand puts the motor controls on a slim wand that hangs from the shade. Press a button and the shade moves, with no remote to lose and no app to set up.

  • Simple motorization
  • Nothing to pair
  • Good for guest rooms and offices

Remote, app, voice and schedules

Smart Motorization

Norman Smart Motorization runs one shade or the whole house from a remote, the Norman app or a voice assistant. Schedules can lower west-facing shades in the afternoon and open the bedroom at sunrise.

  • Rechargeable battery or hardwired
  • Group rooms into scenes
  • The answer for windows out of reach

Where blinds make sense

  • Whole-home orders, when you need many windows covered well on a sensible budget.
  • Kitchens and bathrooms, with faux wood that wipes clean.
  • Home offices, where tilting slats cuts glare without darkening the room.
  • New construction, to replace thin builder blinds.

Good to know

Details worth deciding early

Matching stained trim

Painted blinds are easy to match. Stained trim is harder, because every species and finish reads differently in daylight. We bring stain samples and hold them against your casing at the window, as we did for the wood blinds pictured on this page.

Slat size and stack height

Wider slats give a more open view when tilted and a cleaner look from the street. Every blind also gathers into a stack at the top when it is raised. On a short window that stack can cover a good part of the glass, so we check it during the measure and say so if a shade would suit the window better.

Blinds and room darkening

Blinds control glare well, but light always finds the gaps between slats. Routeless slats close tighter than standard ones. For a bedroom that needs to be dark, a room darkening roller shade is the better tool.

The process

How it works

Three visits at most, and usually two.

  1. We come to you

We bring the samples, so you can hold fabrics and finishes up to your own walls, trim and furniture. We measure every window while we are there. The visit is free.

  2. You get a written quote

A clear price for each window, for exactly what you picked. Change it, trim it or take your time with it.

  3. We install

Your order is built to our measurements and installed by our own team. We haul away the old blinds.

Small details that show

The valance returns to the wall. The bottom rail sits level. The slats close in the same direction in every room. We check all of it on install day, because those are the things you notice every time you walk past the window.

Answers

Blind questions

Are faux wood blinds better than real wood?

Faux wood blinds resist moisture and cost less, so they are the usual choice for kitchens, bathrooms and whole-home orders. Real wood is lighter, which helps on wide windows, and takes stain for a richer finish.

What blinds work best for sliding glass doors?

Blinds are not ideal on a door that moves. Vertical cellular shades, panel track shades or bypass shutters work better and can be matched to the blinds on nearby windows.

Are cordless blinds worth it?

Yes. Cordless blinds lift by hand from the bottom rail, so there are no cords for children or pets to reach, and the window looks cleaner.

How long do custom blinds last?

Well-made faux wood and wood blinds hold up for many years in normal use. Custom blinds also come with a manufacturer warranty, which we explain for each product during your visit.

Can you replace builder-grade blinds in a new home?

Yes. This is one of our most common jobs in new Clemmons neighborhoods. We measure every window in one visit and install the whole house in a day in most cases.
